More good news from the Steve Carell-starring remake of Get Smart today, as director Peter Segal has agreed to cast Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson and Terence Stamp in supporting roles.
Stamp will add to his canon of villains (including most famously, Superman II's General "why do you say these things, when you know I will kill you for it?" Zod), while The Rock will play a new character, Agent 23.
For those who need the refresher, the original '60s sitcom, created by Mel Brooks and Buck Henry, starred Don Adams (also famous for voicing Inspector Gadget on the animated TV show) as Agent 86, a hapless but lucky spy working for CONTROL (read; the U.S.) during the Cold War, tirelessly trying to eradicate the evil doings of the decidedly commie KAOS.
The lovely Anne Hathaway has already been cast as Agent 99 (we know you already knew that, but it's such good news we can't resist mentioning it at any opportunity), and she'll be there when shooting kicks off on February 3 at one of its locations in Los Angeles, Washington D.C. and Moscow.
Moscow? So they're keeing the whole Cold War thing? According to a statement from the director in the press release, they are. "What made the original so unique was that it took place in the Cold War Era and skewered the political landscape," says Segal. "We're trying to embrace that spirit, and there certainly is a lot to skewer today."
