The first teaser trailer for the new **Fantastic Four arrived in January, which has helped drum up some more positive buzz for Fox and Josh Trank’s take on Marvel’s famously dysfunctional hero family. Now here are Trank and writer/producer Simon Kinberg are featured in short videos explaining how they chose Miles Teller, Kate Mara, Michael B. Jordan and Jamie Bell for the lead roles.
Hewing close to the template provided by Ultimate Fantastic Four, Trank’s film eschews a lot of the bright colours and overly jokey dialogue delivered by the two Tim Story movies. Instead, we have a much grittier, more realistic – or at least as far as you can get with these characters – look at young, brilliant people who undergo enormous changes during a trip between dimensions. The palette is muted, the direction appears to be more nodding towards something like Interstellar than OTT comic book styles and the cast were picked for their ability to deliver drama.
We’re promised, however, that there will be lighter touches lurking in amongst the angst, because a truly maudlin Fantastic Four doesn’t really feel in keeping with the characters’ origins.
