After successfully tapping into fan funds with Kickstarter to make his latest directorial effort the way he wanted, Zach Braff saw Wish I Was Here picked up at the Sundance Film Festival by Focus Features with a rollout planned for this year. While backers of the project have already seen snippets (and Sundance audiences have seen the film in its entirety), the first trailer is now online.

Scripted by Braff and his brother Adam, Zach plays Aidan Bloom, a struggling 35-year-old actor who is having trouble finding his identity and providing for his family. He and his wife (Kate Hudson) are struggling financially, and when his father (Mandy Patinkin) falls ill and is unable to pay for their kids’ private schooling, Aidan decides to teach them himself. But he still has a lot of growing and learning to do himself, especially given that he can’t seem to stop leaning on the fantasy character Space-Knight he created as a child.

Frozen’s Josh Gad plays Braff’s on-screen brother (a man with his own issues to deal with), while Joey King and Pierce Gagnon are the kids caught up in Aidan’s life crisis. Wish I Was Here will be here on September 19.
