The last time we saw a studio take on the Frankenstein’s creature story, we got** I, Frankenstein**. But here to wipe the bad memories of that shambling nightmare is something much more promising in Victor Frankenstein, which has thrown the giant switch on its first trailer.
James McAvoy is the titular scientist here, stepping, as he is so wont to do, across ethical lines when it comes to the study of death and how to defeat it. Daniel Radcliffe is close pal and assistant/medical student Igor, who is initially a big supporter of the not-always-so-good-doctor’s experiments, but soon sours on the idea when darker forces approach him to use his breakthroughs in the service of their needs.
Paul McGuigan’s film, which has a script by Max Landis, focuses on the interplay between the main two, and the debate about whether Frankenstein is pushing the boundaries of science and giving people hope or literally creating monsters.
With Andrew Scott, Louise Brealey, Mark Gatiss (clearly McGuigan raided his Sherlock contacts book), Jessica Brown Findlay, Freddie Fox and Daniel Mays in the cast, Victor Frankenstein will be with us in December.
