If you were at last year’s Cannes or London Film Festival, or any of the other festival screenings where Frank Pavich’s documentary Jodorowsky’s Dune hit screens, you’ll have witnessed the story of one of cinema’s great enigmas. It’s the tale of how Chilean-born director Alejandro Jodorowsky delivered an impressive pitch as to how he’d film Frank Herbert’s sprawling science fiction novel. The trailer for the documentary is now online via Yahoo.
As history records, Jodorowsky sadly never got his shot; his attempt was later eclipsed by the coming of the blockbuster science fiction age that launched with** Star Wars**. And Dune, of course, was shot by David Lynch, who made something almost as ambitious, but hugely flawed.
To hear the man himself tell it, Jodorowsky’s version could have been a trippy, visually amazing ride, with his plan to work with risk-takers and visionaries sounding both awe-inspiring and potentially disastrous.
With contributions from fellow filmmakers such as Nicolas Winding Refn and Richard Stanley, Jodorowsky’s Dune will open across the pond in limited release on March 21, and will hopefully see screens over here after that.
