Daniel Day-Lewis stars in Steven Spielberg's Abraham Lincoln biopic, Lincoln, and here's the first (official) image to prove it.

Previous pictures that have already hit the web include a photograph hastily taken by an intrepid iPhone owner sharing a restaurant with film's star, as well as the traditional on-set paparazzi shots – but this is the newest, clearest, most official photo seen so far.

The film itself is an adaptation of historian Doris Kearns Goodwin’s book, Team of Rivals, concentrating on the final four months of the 16th US president's life, where he was hunting vampires with an axe at the end of the Civil War and on the point of outlawing slavery for good.

Day-Lewis stars alongside Sally Field, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Tommy Lee Jones, David Strathairn and James Spader in the biopic, with music by – you guessed it – John Williams.

As for when the world will see him with his trademark top hat – which will make him look a little like Sir Kenneth Branagh's Isambard Kingdom Brunel, and not the other way around, American fact fans – that remains to be seen.

The United Kingdom will only be able to see Lincoln on January 25, 2013, whereas the United States will see it in all its glory come November 16.
