Minions still

Though Universal showed off the first trailer for Illumination Entertainment’s Despicable Me spin-off Minions at CinemaCon in March, it’s only now arriving online. Here then, is the secret origin of Kevin, Stuart, Bob and the rest of the chattering pill-shaped creatures.

As Illumination boss Chris Meledandri told us earlier this year, the new film turns back the clock to a time before the Minions met Steve Carell’s Gru. Way back, in fact…

“We start the Minions film at the dawn of time, when they're Minion single-celled creatures and it takes us all the way up to the 1960s in London and New York. The Minions' goal always has been to serve the biggest, baddest villain they can find. But over the years they've inadvertently ended up killing their own leader through happenstance.

"The movie becomes their quest for a new leader and their target becomes the first female supervillain, Scarlett Overkill, voiced by Sandra Bullock.”

Indeed, that’s the basic story (minus their meeting with Scarlett) told here in the trailer, as we watch the bumbling yet enthusiastic critters latch onto but ultimately destroy several potential bosses. There are some good gags to be found here, marshalled by Illumination regulars Kyle Balda and Pierre Coffin, from Brian Lynch’s script.

With Coffin, Chris Renaud, Dave Rosenbaum, Jon Hamm, Katy Mixon and Jennifer Saunders all lending their voices, **Minions **will hit our screens on June 26.
