A first look at Ralph Fiennes'** The Invisible Woman** has appeared in our inbox and guess what! That title is false advertising. She's not invisible. Look, you can see her face and everything.
The visible lady in question is Nelly Ternan, played by Felicity Jones (pictured), the object of Charles Dickens' (Fiennes) affections over a covert decade-long affair.
Of course, the title of Fiennes' second acting/directing gig is really a metaphor for the enigmatic lady's state of social limbo: she loves the great novelist and her beauty, in turn, haunts him, but Victorian life conspires against them. As well as 'The Very Great Book Of Beards', Fiennes' jumping-off point for the film is Claire Tomalin's biography of Ternan, a married school teacher who looks back over her past with a mixture of nostalgia and sorrow.
It's a framing mechanism familiar from Fiennes' work in The English Patient, and here he's reunited old Minghella alumnus Kristin Scott Thomas. She's graduated from love interest to the mum of the love interest, Catherine Ternan, a woman who may have a thing or two to say about the novelist's controlling ways.
