This week sees the E3 Expo in Los Angeles, which means lots of software, gadget and game announcements. Since games company Electronic Arts is working with DreamWorks on the Need For Speed film, it seemed the natural place to introduce a brief behind-the-scenes look at the movie, which is currently shooting. Star Aaron Paul was on hand to cue the footage, and you can take a look below.
From the looks of this, and what director Scott Waugh says during the video,** Need For Speed** is aiming to get back to more basic, non-CG high-octane racing, as opposed to the OTT heist / action comedies that the Fast & Furious franchise entries have evolved into.
Need For Speed follows Tobey Marshall (Paul), a street racer who goes into business with rich, arrogant car supplier Dino (Dominic Cooper), only to find himself framed when another friend dies during a race.
Sent to jail, Marshall wants revenge and, once released, signs on for a cross-country race for a chance to strike back. But Dino learns about the scheme and puts a bounty on his head, forcing Tobey to go up against various illegal drivers in powerful vehicles.
Michael Keaton plays the reclusive, oddball host of the event who invites the best racers from around the world to compete. Also in the cast are Imogen Poots (as an exotic car dealer who connects rich clients with supercharged rides), Rami Malek, Kid Cudi, Ramon Rodriguez and Harrison Gilbertson.
In the footage, you can see the filmmakers’ attempts to give cinemagoers the point-of-view gaming vantage in action scenes and the various powerful motors on display, including Marshall’s custom Ford Mustang, which will be playable in the next Need For Speed game, Rivals, currently set for release in November.
As for the movie, it’ll hit our screens on March 14 next year.
