Empire arrived in Cannes early this afternoon, readers, and even though the town is still undergoing all the modifications and preparations necessary to host the biggest film festival in the world, there are enough massive posters, standees and displays around town to make an afternoon walk worth our while.
First up, taking pride of place outside the Carlton Hotel – arguably the premier spot for any movie trying to make a name for itself – is a giant display for Gulliver’s Travels, the Jack Black FX-heavy comedy that’s due out around Christmas.
Don’t worry, you’re not alone in forgetting that the movie – which also stars Jason Segel and Emily Blunt – existed in the first place. Things have been awfully quiet on the Gulliver’s front for quite a while now, but what better way to tell the world that you’re still around and kicking than with a poster that not only is roughly the size of a minibus, but is also in ACTUAL 3D. Or, to be more precise, the background of the display is set back from Black, wearing his trademark surprised movie poster face.
No sign of Segel or Blunt on this poster, but we do get a sense, what with Black being tied down by scores of tiny Liliputians (a key scene in the original Jonathan Swift novel) that this modern-day comedy may be fairly faithful to its source material.
And yes, it’s in 3D. Isn’t everything?
