Suicide Squad: first glimpse of Jared Leto's Joker

Update: Following yesterday's image of the assembled Suicide Squad at David Ayer's cast read-through, Ayer has addressed the notable absence of Jared Leto with a new image. No white-face make-up yet, but here's a green-haired Leto homaging the cover of Alan Moore's famous Batman graphic novel The Killing Joke. If you're going to pick a Joker, we'd say that's absolutely the one to go for...

These days, it’s often more common to get the first proper glimpse of a big film’s cast on social media than it is from some official press release. Such is the case – albeit simply assembled for a script read-through and not in costume – with most of the leads of David Ayer’s Warner Bros./DC Comics team film Suicide Squad. The director tweeted out the first image.

Seen here with Ayer are Joel Kinnaman (Rick Flagg), Will Smith (Deadshot), Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje (Killer Croc), Jay Hernandez (unknown), Margot Robbie (Harley Quinn), Jai Courtney (Boomerang), Cara Delevingne (Enchantress), Karen Fukuhara (unknown) and Viola Davis (Amanda Waller). Notably absent is Jared Leto, who plays the Joker and was either taking the picture (unlikely) or busy elsewhere, plus Scott Eastwood.

But you might notice a couple of new additions – they are Ike Barinholtz, last seen in Bad Neighbours, and Adam Beach. No details have been released on whom they might be playing.

Suicide Squad is the group of Batman’s rogues gallery and other villains (plus some antiheroes) wrangled together by the government and coerced into executing near impossible missions with the promise of reduced sentences. Ayer is set to kick off shooting later this month with an August 5, 2016 release date on the schedule for both the US and over here.
