If you're one of the 2.6 million people who follow Simon Pegg on Twitter (enough to form his own city, Peggville, where the currency is fried gold), then you'll have seen him mention an upcoming exclusive for his new film, The World's End. And here it is, a new poster.
Like the Comic-Con World's End teaser poster, there's definitely an emphasis on the public house side of things – the film is about a pub crawl, after all – but this time around there's much more of a Ragnarök / armageddon / cataclysm / doomsday vibe, what with the licks of flame, falling asteroids and the excellent tagline of "Good food. Fine ales. Total annihilation."
The plot of the final part of the Three Flavours Cornetto trilogy from Simon Pegg (writes, stars), Nick Frost (stars) and Edgar Wright (writes, directs) finds five childhood friends reuniting after 20 years because one of them – Pegg's 40 year-old Gary King, who refuses to grow up – is trying to drag his less-than-enthusiastic mates – Nick Frost, Paddy Considine and the recently-confirmed Eddie Marsan and Martin Freeman – on a recreation of an epic 12-venue pub crawl in their home town, which culminated at a boozer called The World’s End. That's somewhat apt, because this time it seems that the world may actually be ending.
The logo for the film is, roughly speaking, the same one revealed on the front page of Pegg and Wright's working script a few months ago (albeit added to a pub sign). There's a suggestion here of a world-flattening asteroid, but Pegg and Wright previously told Empire that the film will be a 'social' sci-fi movie, where the threat might be something akin to a John Wyndham (Day of The Triffids) or John Christopher novel (The Tripods). Curiouser and curiouser...
**The World’s End **will arrive on Wednesday August 14, 2013, just in time for Ragnarök.
