Over the last three years, fresh-faced Jamie Bell has braved the hostile jungle in Peter Jackson’s King Kong, stormed the beaches of Iwo Jima in Clint Eastwood’s Flags Of Our Fathers and will soon be seen teleporting from one State to another opposite Samuel L. Jackson and Diane Lane in Doug Liman’s Jumper. Not bad for a twinkle-footed 21-year old from the North East. But before the young actor returns to the Major Motion Picture arena, there’s the not-so-small matter of his superb leading performance in low-budget coming of age drama, Hallam Foe.
Directed by Young Adam-helmer David Mackenzie, the movie follows young Scottish scallywag Hallam (Bell), as he attempts to come to terms with the sudden death of his mother. With a voyeuristic tendency to spy on members of his family and pretty much anyone else who happens to get in the way of his binoculars – particularly the gorgeous Kate Breck, played by the equally terrific Sophia Myles – Hallam’s journey (supplemented by a kickass soundtrack) takes him from the pastoral expanses of the Scottish highlands to the soaring rooftops of the Edinburgh skyline. Having already scooped awards at the Berlin Film Festival, this is going to be one to watch out for when it hits screens at the end of August.
