Our Damon Wise is at the Karlovy Vary film festival in the Czech Republic, and he got the chance to chat with John Malkovich about his role in the upcoming Jonah Hex, the Josh Brolin-starring adaptation of the comic book set shortly after the US Civil War.

"I love Josh Brolin – he's a friend of mine," Malkovich told us, "and he said, 'Would you be interested?' And I like the guy, Jimmy Hayward, who's directing him, so I said, 'Sure.' "

"It was fun. It's based on an American comic book from the 70s. Might do OK! I play a plantation-owner called Quentin Turnbull, who holds Jonah Hex responsible for the death of his son in the Civil War – it's set right after the American Civil War. 1872, I think it's set in. It's Josh, Megan and Michael Fassbender, who's terrific.”

While this is largely information we already knew, it's worth noting that Malkovich doesn't hint at any of the voodoo practicing that was originally reportedly a part of his character. It also confirms that the Hex/Turnbull backstory remains largely the same as the comics. The rest, however, will have to wait until we see the film sometime around August 2010.
