Gareth Edwards’ **Monsters **was a hugely impressive debut: a shot-on-the-hoof independent drama with massive, tentacled, alien creatures that matched any blockbuster’s visual effects. Edwards, of course, is now working on bringing Godzilla back to our big screens for Warner Bros., but his own monstrous creations live on in Monsters: Dark Continent — not so much a sequel to Edwards’ film as a “continuation”, which Edwards is executive producing.
**Empire **is proud to present this world’s-first glimpse at the expanded world of Monsters, directed by first-time feature helmer Tom Green (Misfits), starring Johnny Harris (Welcome To The Punch), Sam Keeley (What Richard Did) and Joe Dempsie (Game Of Thrones), and depicting another Infected Zone, this time in a U.S. military-dominated Middle-east (the film was shot primarily in Jordan).
“As soon as I watched Monsters I completely identified with the idea of using real locations as a foundation on which to build a world of limitless scale,” says Green, by way of introducing this first look.
“From my first visit to the location shown here, in Jordan, it was somewhere I felt was key to making Dark Continent work. The moonscape-like environment was the perfect basis for an ‘alien’ landscape. The quarry trucks you see here became ‘buggies’ to transport the remains of firebombed monster herds to be incinerated, with all the leading characters emerging from the dust to witness the scale of the death toll for the first time — and for one character maybe too many times…”
Monsters: Dark Continent is out in 2014.
