If, like us, your solar plexus is still recovering from David Michôd’s crunching crime drama Animal Kingdom, you’ll be awaiting his next movie with a sense of anticipation. That film, The Rover, arrives later this summer and here’s a new featurette providing a clearer idea of what to expect. Click on the video below for a Guy Pearce-curated look at Roverworld.

Set in a Australia still off-kilter and adjusting to an unspecified apocalypse known as ‘the Collapse’, **The Rover **follows Pearce’s loner, Eric, as he pursues Scoot McNairy's small band of fugitives who have chanced upon his car and made off with it. That pursuit, executed with a relentlessness that makes the T-1000 look like a rambler out for an afternoon stroll, is dogged and violent. The naif-like Rey (Robert Pattinson) is his link to the car thieves and a strange, dangerous bond develops between them.

Eric’s mysterious motivation is just one of the themes explored by a film that looks like fitting neatly alongside the Mad Max movies in the grimy, startling Aussiepocalypse genre we’ve literally just invented.

The Rover arrives in the UK on August 15. **Empire **caught it in Cannes; click here for an early-look review.
