Danny Boyle's Trance is a blistering return to the nasty noir terrain of Shallow Grave, albeit transposed to the mean streets of London. You'll be able to catch in cinemas tomorrow, but as a prelude, Empire's lengthy jaw-jaw with the director is available right here and now for your viewing.

**Empire **met Boyle in one of the film's key locations: the modernist north London pad used by Vincent Cassel's hoodlum, so look out for some behind-the-scenes glimpses of the director back on familiar turf.

As Boyle explains, **Trance **delves into the dark art of hypnosis and the human psyche, and follows in the footsteps of Christopher Nolan and Michel Gondry in drawing quirky parallels between the art of illusion and filmmaking. Fascinating, too, to hear him paying homage to his great influence, Nicolas Roeg, who did likewise on Don't Look Now and Performance.

Trance **is in cinemas on March 27. Download Empire'siPad app for more from Lord Sir Daniel of Boyle and the film.
