Ewan McGregor is the world’s greatest bank robber.

Don’t worry, though, readers (and, indeed, the Empire lawyers; and any members of the Metropolitan Police, who might be preparing to feel Ewan’s collar) – it’s only a movie.

McGregor, who’s becoming increasingly busy of late now that he seems to have stopped zooming around the world on a motorbike, is in talks to star in The Electric Slide, a movie that documents the incredible true-life adventures of Eddie Dodson, aka The Yankee Bandit.

During the early 1980s, Dodson – an antiques dealer who turned to robbery to feed a heroin addiction, and who was known as the Yankee Bandit because of his propensity for wearing a Yankee ball cap - robbed an astonishing 72 banks in the Los Angeles area, without using violence.

He was eventually arrested by the pesky Feds, and died in 2003 after a couple of stints in prison.

Dodson’s incredible story was documented by his friend Timothy Ford, who wrote an article for Gear magazine entitled The Yankee Bandit: The Life And Times Of Eddie Dodson, The World’s Greatest Bank Robber.

**The Electric Slide **will be an adaptation of that article, with Tristan Patterson writing the screenplay. Christine Vachon, Lorenzo di Bonaventura, Brad Simpson and Jocelyn Hayes will produce.

British actress Carey Mulligan, who wowed them at Sundance recently with her performances in The Greatest and An Education, is also in talks to star in the movie; the first sign of her burgeoning stardom.
