Now, we haven't seen the film so we can't fully judge it, but based on a trailer that recorded breathtaking new levels of not funny, the fact that it's from the makers of Date Movie and a critical reception in the US that might as well come with pitchforks and flaming torches, we're going to say Epic Movie's leap to the top of the US box office is not a positive comment on the state of our world.
The film, which pokes fun at blockbusters that came out about 8 minutes ago nabbed a solid $19.2million over the weekend. Following quite closely behind with $14.3million was Joe Carnahan's assassin pile up, Smokin' Aces, which also received tepid reviews. The only other new entry to crack the top ten was Jennifer Garner rom-com Catch and Release, which grabbed $8million. The rest of the chart was almost entirely made up of Oscar nominees and a film with a rampaging dinosaur skeleton. To the naked eye, it look a great deal like this:
