Teen fiction vampire franchise becomes movie shock! Before you groan too loudly, however, take a moment to reflect on the pedigree of Vampire Academy: Blood Sisters. It comes to us courtesy of brothers Mark and Daniel Waters who, respectively, directed Mean Girls and wrote Heathers. It's very possible that there's something in this after all. See if you can find it in the trailer.
Based on the books by Richelle Mead, the story follows Rose Hathaway, a 17-year-old girl who shares a mental and spiritual bond with best pal Lissa. The thing is that Lissa just so happens to be a vampire. The pair attend a special school for bloodsuckers trying to cling to their humanity, but it seems not all of their kind share that agenda.
Who's this for? Judging by this trailer it seems that the Weinstein's marketing people are keen to stress it's for everybody. With a Valentine's Day release, the idea is obviously that this will be date movie central, and the clip's action-heavy second half is likely designed to reassure guys that they might enjoy it in spite of themselves.
Olga Kurylenko, Joely Richardson, Zoey Deutch, Lucy Fry and Danila Kozlovski are the stars, and Vampire Academy: Blood Sisters is out in the UK a few days later than the US, on February 19.
