Cancel the next shipment of red hair dye trucking its way to Emma Stone’s house! Because while she has just been announced by Sony as part of the Spider-Man cast, she’s not playing Mary Jane Watson. Nope, the Zombieland actress has actually won the role of The Vulture. Kidding! She’s playing Gwen Stacy.

A press release issued by Sony reveals that Gwen will be one of the two main female leads in the film (looks like Stone’s casting really does mean Stacy will be the focus of this first film instead of MJ), playing opposite Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker.

The new take on the Spidey story, of course, brings the character back to high school and reboots his earliest days with his powers.

Sony president Matt Tolmach gushes: “It’s been an incredible journey for us to watch Emma’s star rise as an actress. She is extraordinarily talented and has a very special on-screen spark that is perfect for this role. Given her history with the studio, casting her in one of our most important franchises is a real thrill.”

And Marc Webb adds: “The chemistry between Andrew and Emma was stunning and made Emma the clear choice. At the heart of the story of Peter Parker is not only the amazing Spider-Man, but also an ordinary teenager who is wondering what he has to do to get the girl. Andrew and Emma will bring everything audiences expect to these roles, but also make them their own. Much to my surprise, it was fun to find out that our choice for Gwen is also a natural blonde.”

While we’ll all get to see her sans the usual red colour in DreamWorks’ The Help, we’ll have to wait until July 2012 to properly see her in action as Gwen. And it's great news to see Stone finally breaking through.
