If Dope had any more buzz around it, it’d have the Rock riding on the back of it, Journey 2-style. It was a hit with critics at Sundance and is moseying over to this part of the world next month. To spread those bee-sounds a little further, it has a new trailer to share with its UK audience. Click below to do the do.

The film sees three self-professed geeks, aspiring college students and inseparable pals – Malcolm (Shameik Moore), Jib (The Grand Budapest Hotel's Tony Revolori) and Diggy (Kiersey Clemons) – fall in with a new and potentially scary high-school party scene. Here, though, like Superbad meets Blood Simple, there’s the added jeopardy of a sack of drugs they unwittingly end up in possession of. Here’s hoping none of them have seen Shallow Grave.

Dope is also notable for its terrific score and the acting debut of rapper A$AP Rocky. He plays a cheery gangster called Dom who’s on hand when a drug deal goes south and the three friends are left in possession of enough product to populate an entire season of The Wire. Expect more funnies than thrills, judging by the early word and this promo.

Writer/director Rick Famuyiwa is a grad of the illustrious SoCal school that spawned the likes of Judd Apatow, Will Ferrell and George Lucas. Expect to hear a lot more about him in the future. Catch his latest when Dope lands in UK cinemas on September 4.
