Clint Eastwood held a press conference in Cannes yesterday to support You Must Remember This, the documentary that he's narrated about the 85th anniversary of Warner Bros studios. While there he was asked – by our very own Chris Hewitt – if he'd be interested in reviving the Dirty Harry franchise, as has been rumoured for several months.
"I don't think the San Francisco Police Department would have a 77-year-old man on the police force," he laughed. "It would be highly unrealistic. People have asked me over the years 'would you like to revisit Dirty Harry?' But everything would depend on a script. But, really, no. There's a time to leave things alone."
As much as the idea of another Dirty Harry excites us, we can't help think that Clint's absolutely right. His career as a director is going rather well, with his latest film The Changeling getting some of the biggest raves of the Cannes Film Festival. And he's said he's all but given up acting, so why take the risk of sullying the memory of a beloved character? Let's just be thankful for the old movies and watch those.
