This weekend, the Directors Guild and Screen Actors Guild dealt out their prizes and, though they largely went to the favourites, there seems to be no film that's going to sweep the Oscar board.
The DGA gave its top prize to Joel and Ethan Coen for No Country For Old Men, putting it in pole position to take Best Picture and Best Director at the Oscars next month.
SAG gave its awards as follows:
Best Actor - Daniel Day Lewis, There Will Be Blood
Best Actress - Julie Christie, Away From Her
Best Supporting Actor - Javier Bardem, No Country For Old Men
Best Supporting Actress - Ruby Dee, American Gangster
Outstanding Performance By A Cast - No Country For Old Men
{2008 SAG Awards}
The only real surprise in that list is Ruby Dee. The veteran actress was barely mentioned in the list of potential Oscar nominees, but has since been nominated. Given the fact that most of the Oscar voting body is made up of actors, the odds on her winning will be instantly slashed. The question is, can anyone now beat Day Lewis and Christie?
