Deborah Kerr, six time Oscar nominee and star of From Here To Eternity, has died at the age of 86.

Born Deborah Jane Kerr-Trimmer in Scotland, Kerr originally trained as a ballet dancer, first appearing at Sadler's Wells in 1938. She made the switch to film in 1940 with an uncredited role in Contraband.

Kerr enjoyed a career that spanned over 40 years, in which she was Academy Award nominated six times and finally given an honorary Oscar in 1993.

Kerr's most famous role, and the one for which she will be most remembered, is that of Karen Holmes, the adulterous wife in From Here To Eternity. Along with Burt Lancaster, was part of one of cinema's most famous kisses as the pair clinched on a beach as waves crashed around them.

Kerr is survived by her husband, Peter Viertel, two daughters and three grandchildren.
