George Clooney, since you're interested.
Like they say, what goes around, comes around. Robert De Niro has, somewhat surprisingly, mentioned to MTV that he will co-produce and star in an English language remake of French thriller 36 Quai des Orfevres - a film that was heartily inspired in tone by Michael Mann’s Heat, which apart from being one of the best films ever, is quite well known for housing one of De Niro’s best performances.
What we shall now refer to as the original version of** 36** centres around two police detectives (played by French acting titans Gerard Depardieu and Daniel Auteil) racing to solve a series of highly daring and particularly nasty armed robberies. When one’s dubious methods put him on the wrong side of the law, a bitter vendetta begins between them.
Unfortunately, De Niro didn’t divulge was who is playing which part, but with production set to start ticking over in New York City at the end of this year, the answer to that question won’t be far away.
The new screenplay has already been written by Dean Georgaris, best known for refitting another big thriller, The Manchurian Candidate (we’ll let Paycheck slide). Georgaris is De Niro’s co-producer on the film, and they’ve brought in the very talented Marc Forster, who you may remember from such films as Monster’s Ball, Finding Neverland, and the very recent Stranger Than Fiction, to direct.
