David O. Russell is a director know for his intense approach to his work - intensity that occasionally reaches a Christian Bale-level. But now he's found the silver lining to life, with the news that he's set to direct the film adaptation of The Silver Lining Playbook, based on the novel by Matthew Quick.
For those of you, like us, suddenly determined to get hold of this book and read it based on Russell's eye for material, the story follows a former teacher called Pat, who suffered a breakdown after splitting from his wife. After being released from a mental institution, he returns home to his parents' basement and begins to train himself both mentally and physically to win her back, convinced that his hard work will somehow win her over.
Russell will also adapt the screenplay from Quick's novel, all for the Weinstein Company to produce. Let's hope that the film's production is less fraught with difficulty than his last film, Nailed, with Jessica Biel and Jake Gyllenhaal, which suffered financial problems throughout its production. This one sounds like a good fit for Russell, so we want to see it made, dagnabbit!
