Coppola To Direct Tetro

Francis Ford Coppola's directing mojo is back back back. No sooner has he finished shooting Youth Without Youth, than he's announced his next project. As the headline says, the new film will be called Tetro, and the writer / director has already cast his leading man: Matt Dillon.

Tetro will be about the divisions within an artistic immigrant family. Sound familiar? Google the words 'Coppola' and 'dynasty' and it soon will. This family, however, live in Buenos Aires. Coppola says in the press release that a third of the city's residents are descendants of Italian immigrants. Which makes it as good a place as any to put a fictitious representation of your kin.

The film will mark the first re-teaming of Dillon and Coppola (or pretty much anyone and Coppola) in nearly a quarter of a century, after their one-two combination of The Outsiders and Rumble Fish, both released in 1983.

Youth Without Youth was financed by Coppola's own winery business, and he has plans to produce Tetro along the same lines, with a small budget and modest scale of production. Shotting is expect to commence later this year, once he's finished in the editing room (with Walter Murch! Joy!) and gotten Youth Without Youth into the world. Rock on. If he were a football team, Empire would support Francis F.C.
