Anyone who has seen The Losers, Avatar and, to a lesser extent given her more limited screen time, Star Trek, knows that that Zoe Saldana can be a badass. Now she’s getting a chance to prove it over and over again as the lead character in Colombiana, the latest action thriller dreamt up by Luc Besson. The trailer has just kicked in the Internet’s door and you can watch it below.
Colombiana finds Besson – though he only conceived the story, handing directorial duties over to Transporter 3’s Olivier Megaton – in a Nikita-style mood, with Saldana as lethal assassin Cataleya Restrepo.
Know why she’s an ice-cold hit woman? It’s because her parents were killed by mobsters right in front of her in Bogota. The trailer takes pains to explain this fact more than once, even going so far as to have Saldana state it explicitly near the end, which seems like (pun intended here) overkill.
Still, there’s plenty of the heroine on display (and we don’t just mean the odd skimpy outfit) as Cataleya slaughters her way through a series of vigilante killings in an attempt to find her folks’ murderers and exact vengeance. She’ll be hunted by agents, including Lennie James and Michael Vartan, and helped by her uncle (Cliff Curtis), who trained her up in the art of dispatching people in cinematic style.
This one, frankly, could go either way, though Saldana fans will be happy to see her take the lead. Have a look and let us know your thoughts.
There’s no UK release date set yet, though **Colombiana **arrives across the pond on September 2.
