There’s clearly something in the water. And we don’t mean a Hippotatomus. With movies becoming TV shows left, right and centre, one more is looking to make the leap between screens big and small – though this one feels like a more logical extension of the original. Yes, Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs is in development as a TV cartoon.

The series will focus on the high school years of eccentric scientist Flint Lockwood. Set years before the first film, it’s nevertheless hoping to fit in appearances from the movie’s characters, including Flint’s father Tim, Steve the Monkey and even Sam Sparks, his future love interest, as the new school reporter. The announcement doesn’t mention whether any of the voice cast – which has included Bill Hader, Anna Faris and Neil Patrick Harris across the two films – will be back for recording booth duty.

Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs has a tremendous legacy as beloved children’s books and a duo of highly popular feature films, showing how great ideas can succeed across media. We believe audiences both old and new are going to love this fiercely funny franchise re-imagined for the small screen,” DXH Media president and COO Steven DeNure said in an announcement, presumably while snacking on a Cantelope, the fiend.

There's no word on when this might hit the telly either here or in the US, but it would have to be next year at the earliest.
