Despite boasting great actors, funny types and a welter of political satire, small-town competition comedy Butter hasn’t exactly enjoyed the smoothest route to screens. Originally set for release last year, it’ll now see the inside of American cinemas in October. The first trailer has arrived via Yahoo and can be seen below.
Focusing on the bitter rivalries that bubble up in small-town Iowa, the story follows Laura Pickler (Jennifer Garner), a straight-laced, down-home woman married to a former butter carving champion called Bob (Ty Burrell). She thinks they can parlay his fame into politics and also has ambitions to become as well-known as he was in the field of carving butter.
But there are a few obstacles in their way, notably a stripper named Tokyo Rose (Olivia Wilde) – or Brooke, to her parents – who has won over Bob and now plans to challenge Laura for the Butter carving title. Then there’s young Destiny (Yara Shahidi), newly adopted by Julie (Alicia Silverstone) and Ethan (Rob Corddry) Emmet. It turns out she too has a talent for creating milk-solid-based masterpieces. So the stage is set for a showdown.
After playing the festival game for a few months, Butter is headed for release in the US on October 5. There’s no word on a UK date yet, but with that cast involved, you’ve got to figure it’ll be headed over here either later this year or early next. There's a touch of Christopher Guest's movies about this one, and we want to see it.
