Fast-rising writing duo Dirk Blackman (pictured) and Howard McCain – the team behind mad Vikings vs aliens movie, Outlander – have just been tapped to write the movie version of the comic book, ZMD: Zombies Of Mass Destruction.

The Red 5 title, created by Kevin Grevioux, the impossibly deep-voiced dude who co-created Underworld (the latest iteration of which, Underworld: Rise Of The Lycans, was co-written by… Dirk Blackman and Howard McCain), follows an elite team of soldiers sent into the Middle East on a covert mission. They soon find out that they’ve been sent, in what seems like a suicide mission, to take out a zombie army. Yikes.

Sounds suitably high-concept for McCain and Blackman, who forever endeared himself to Empire when he popped over for a highly entertaining Outlander Q&A at last year’s Movie-Con. There’s no word, though, on what this means for their take on Conan, for director Brett Ratner (who today signed on to direct another comic book adaptation, Youngblood), but we wish them well with ZMD regardless.

Benderspink, the prolific production company, is calling the shots on ZMD. No studio is yet attached.
