Berg Set To Play Battleship?

Here's a boardgame adaptation we didn't see coming: Peter Berg is in talks to direct Battleship, based on - yes - the strategy board game. You may remember one of its previous movie appearances here{ =nofollow}.

The game, of course, involves two opponents placing ships on a board and then each trying to guess where the other's ships are in order to sink them. This version will be less with the peg boards and more with the "epic naval adventure", so we're told. We're kinda wishing they'd find some way to combine the two - a really, really big peg board or something.

Berg is of course the man behind The Kingdom and last year's Hancock. The screenwriters are Jon and Erich Hoeber, brothers who recently wrote Kate Beckinsale-starring thriller Whiteout, and have worked on comic-book adaptation Red with Bruce Willis set to star.

The weirdest piece of news in this whole story is that Universal, the studio behind Battleship, is also working on three other board game adaptations: Candy Land with Kevin Lima directing; Ridley Scott's Monopoly and, strangest of all, Ouija Board at Michael Bay's Platinum Dunes. It must only be a matter of time before Hungry Hippos goes into development.
