As the DVD / Blu-ray release date for those superheroic Avengers creeps ever closer, the marketing is really ramping up with documentary clips, deleted scenes, gag reels and more making their way online. Now something intriguing has arrived, with the release of a piece from the deleted alternate opening to the movie. Take a look below.

brightcove.createExperiences();It’s especially enticing because it’s a peek into an altogether darker vision of the film, one framed by a battered, tired Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders) giving her opinion on what went down in New York. From the looks of this, Agent Hill isn’t too impressed with the actions of her boss (that would be Samuel L Jackson’s Nick Fury) and the costumed crusaders – even though they managed to save the world from invasion. It’s also a much bleaker tone than the knock around final version of the movie.

In truth, it’s clear to see why Joss Whedon and / or the Marvel gang decided to go another way: the Avengers didn’t really need the downer energy that this provides. But it’s a nice glimpse into the process of refining a big movie.

**Avengers Assemble **is out on Blu-Ray and DVD in the UK on September 17, which is ahead of the September 25 US release, but already causing controversy for apparently lacking some of the bigger features, such as the Joss Whedon commentary…
