Atonement Circles The Globes

Seven nominations for Joe Wright’s opus

Atonement Circles The Globes

Well tie us down and call us Susan, it seems that Joe Wright’s Atonement has been nominated for an award. Who’d have seen that coming, eh? Nominated for no less than seven gongs, the film is currently leading the pack of would-be winners in the nominations for 2008’s Golden Globes. Both Keira Knightley and James McAvoy made the shortlist for their acting roles, with 13-year-old Saoirse Ronan similarly honoured with a Best Supporting Actor nod.

Aaron Sorkin penned Charlie Wilson’s War also racked up a fair stack of five nominations, while Michael Clayton, No Country For Old Men and Sweeney Todd landed four each. Bookies will likely see their custom increased over the next few days as The Golden Globes is widely seen as a good indicator of who will be up for Oscar gold. But with no less than seven separate nominations for Best Drama, the net is cast pretty wide.

To our minds, though, there are a few rather glaring anomalies. Where was Once for Best original Song? Where’s the mention for the awesome Before The Devil Knows Your Dead? No Jesse James for best Picture? And no nod for I Now Pronounce You Chuck And Larry? There’s no justice in the world.
