Though it's taken from the source book, we’ll be interested to see how many cinemas complain about the sheer length of this title even in this digital day and age. But here in any case is the first trailer for (deep breath) Alexander And The Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day. Those who are seriously spoiler averse should be wary because we suspect this takes footage from the entire film.

The family comedy stars Steve Carell, Jennifer Gardner, Kerris Dorsey, Dylan Minette and Ed Oxenbould as members of a family who thought they were about to have the best day ever. Everything seemed to be going right for them, except for poor Alexander (Oxenbould), who never seems to be able to catch a break.

No one wants to hear his complaints about bad luck, until they all end up going through their own terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day. Job opportunities are missed, driving tests are flubbed and all manner of awful events occur. But is it just to help them appreciate the good days?

Though the message of the film appears to be hammered home a little hard in places and we suspect that this gives away the entire plot of the film, there’s charm to spare here, with the main cast joined by a reliable ensemble of funny folk including Jennifer Coolidge, Megan Mullally, Donald Glover and Dick Van Dyke.

Miguel Arteta called the shots, and Lisa Cholodenko and Rob Lieber worked on drafts of the scripts adapting Judith Viorst’s book. Alexander – we’ll just call it that to save our poor tired typing fingers, and Oliver Stone be damned – will be out in the UK on October 24.
