Spearheaded by Glenn Close (who co-wrote the script and is producing as well as starring), period drama Albert Nobbs tackles gender issues, gentle comedy, romance, fear and loathing all in one film. And now the trailer has arrived, which you can watch below.
Set in late 19th century Ireland, the plot finds Close as the title character, a butler in one of Dublin’s swankiest hotels. But while Nobbs is a loyal and trusted part of the staff, he hides a secret none of his colleagues have guessed – he’s actually a woman, who has disguised herself in order to throw off the shackles of a society that believes the female of the species should not be independent.
So convincing is her ruse that when she meets Helen (Mia Wasikowska), there’s a spark between them. But “Albert” is also worried by her feelings for a hunky painter.
Adapted from George Moore’s short story, Nobbs also features Aaron Johnson, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Brendan Gleeson and Pauline Collins. Directed by Rodrigo Garcia, the film should arrive next year, though there’s no solid date set yet.
