It was the night of nights, *le grand camembert *of the movie calendar, and the 86th Academy Awards didn't disappoint with its glitz, glamour and occasional sightings of an upright Jennifer Lawrence. But it was the awards themselves that everyone came for and it turrned out to be a night of celebration for 12 Years A Slave, this year's Best Picture, and Gravity which carried off seven Oscars, including Best Director, Best Soundtrack and Best Visual Effects.
As predicted, early frontrunner American Hustle fell away at the last. Instead, Steve McQueen's slave opus scored big with Academy voters, taking away the big prize, while the technical virtuosity of Alfonso Cuarón's space odyssey saw the Mexican add Best Director to his BAFTA, DGA and Golden Globe awards.
In the acting categories, Cate Blanchett (Blue Jasmine), Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto (both Dallas Buyers Club) claimed expected wins in the Best Actress, Best Actor and Best Supporting actor categories respectively. In a more closely contested category, Lupita Nyong'o saw off Jennifer Lawrence to take Best Supporting Actress for 12 Years A Slave.
There were few eyebrows raised as **Gravity **swept the technical categories, winning for Cinematography, Sound Mixing, Sound Editing, *Editing *Editing and in the least surprising Oscar ever, Best Visual Effects.
