Ghidorah, Godzilla 2 Monsters Announced

The Legendary panel at this year’s Comic-Con kicked off with big news in every sense. Gareth Edwards (currently at Lucasfilm in San Francisco) sent a video thanking the Comic-Con audience for their support of the first film and officially confirming that Godzilla 2 is will commence as soon as he’s done with his Star Wars film. The big reveal, however, was a short concept reel to cue up what he has in mind for the monster sequel, including three fan-favourite names that quickly caused the resident tokusatsu nuts to lose their kaiju-loving minds.

“There is still one secret that remains hidden,” read the titles. “There are others.” Rodan, Mothra, Ghidorah. “Let. Them. Fight.” For those not entirely au fait with the daikaiju rogues’ gallery, Mothra, shockingly, is a giant moth who first appeared in the 1961 film of the same name. Rodan is a monstrous pteranodon that debuted in 1956, while Ghidorah (aka King Ghidorah) is a three-headed alien dragon that first crashed to earth in 1964’s Ghidora, The Three-Headed Monster. While the film is a ways off at this point and nothing’s set in stone, it seems that Edwards has a four-way battle royal planned for his second Godzilla picture. All we need now is Jet Jaguar and Mecha-Godzilla and it’s a party!

Edwards' recorded message ended with an appearance from the beast itself, bellowing deafeningly into the air before we cut back to Edwards moaning to the cameraman "I don’t even know what he’s saying half the time. He just roars and roars. Get over yourself, you’re not Bryan Cranston!"
