Anyone who witnessed the tepid Britcom Fortysomething, starring Hugh Laurie as a doctor, would have been stunned at the suggestion that, a mere two years later, he would be an American television sex symbol and Golden Globe winner for playing... a doctor. All the more surprising is his casting against upper-class-twit-role type, which sees him as a thoroughly enjoyable miserable git who looks in places others are too sentimental about illness to see. But he is the reason for watching this CSI/ER hybrid that is highly repetitive, yet always compelling.
