Soon to be seen playing David Frost in Ron Howard’s Frost/Nixon, Brit actor Michael Sheen is fast becoming the film world’s go-to guy for uncanny impressions. His most famous facsimile, that of former PM Tony Blair, impressed greatly in Stephen Frears’ award-winning The Queen, but then he had honed the role three years previously for this acclaimed TV drama by the same director. Also starring an effective David Morrissey as Gordon Brown, The Deal charts the friendship and rivalry between our current and former heads of government, and examines how their legendary resentment came to be. Aside from the odd satirical misstep, this is an insightful piece that works well either alone or as a companion piece to The Queen, and which takes full advantage of its impressively games leads.
