Damages: Season One

‘The Devil Wears Prada meets The Firm’ is a heck of a pitch, but even on those terms Damages’ first season doesn’t disappoint. Fresh from her role in The Shield, Glenn Close won a Golden Globe as ruthless lawyer Patty Hewes, out to nail an Enron-type insider trader (Ted Danson on cracking form) with the help of her newest employee, a well-meaning naif played by the reliably awful Rose Byrne. The jury’s still out on the series’ long-term potential, but on the evidence of these first 13 episodes, there’s a good case for its future.
