Amazing Stories: Season 1

At once a platform for tested and untested filmmakers and an attempt to resurrect the anthology supernatural shows (Twilight Zone, Outer Limits) of his youth, Steven Spielberg’s

first major foray into TV is a hit-and-mostly-miss affair. Of the 24 episodes here, the best episodes unsurprisingly come from Spielberg (his World War II drama The Mission is bravura stuff until it is all undone by a risible ending) and Martin Scorsese, whose Mirror, Mirror is genuinely unnerving through sheer filmmaking skill. There are some fun oddities (an early effort from Brad Bird) and some interesting resonances for Spielberg completists, but mostly this feels like Spielberg-lite, very few of the episodes living up to the promise of the title.
