You better hold on tight, spider monkeys! Twilight is coming back — only not quite as you remember it. 12 years after the epically titled The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn — Part 2 brought the Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart starring YA vampire series to a close on the big screen, we're getting word that a new animated take on the saga is headed our way. As reported by Deadline, Netflix has given a straight-to-series order for Midnight Sun, an animation based on author Stephanie Meyer's same-named 2020 book.
Tell Me Lies writer and co-executive producer Sinead Daly is aboard to pen the adaptation of Meyers' book, which gives the Twilight saga a compelling new wrinkle: rather than following the story from Bella Swan's POV, Midnight Sun takes up sparkly vampire Edward Cullen's perspective on events as the deathless dude's path crosses with the angst-ridden teen. First floated as a prospective Lionsgate project in 2023, the series was confirmed to be an animation back in March of this year as studio vice chairman Michael Burns revealed the project was being shopped around for potential buyers. And as this news confirms, it sure looks like they found one.
Whilst we've no word on who'll be animating the show or lending their voices to it just yet (dare we wish for a Scott Pilgrim Takes Off style full cast reunion?), the prospect of a revisit to Forks — especially in light of that first film in particular's critical reappraisal in recent years — is a tantalising one. And knowing Pattinson's performance as Edward was based off of Meyers' drafted Midnight Sun manuscript only adds intrigue to seeing that tale being told on the small screen. However this one eventually lands, we've gotta give it to you straight — even after all these years, Twilight is still like our own personal brand of heroin. Bring on Midnight Sun!
