Hard as it might be to believe (we don't want to believe this time, yet it's true), The X-Files is 30 years old this year. And according to creator Chris Carter, we could be in for a rebooted version, courtesy of Black Panther director Ryan Coogler.

Talking to Canadian radio show On the Coast, Carter said, "I just spoke to a young man, Ryan Coogler, who is going to remount The X-Files with a diverse cast. So, he's got his work cut out for him because we covered so much territory."

The X-Files launched on Fox in the States in 1993 and ran until 2002. Two movies of differing quality in 1998 and 2008 followed, then there were further, even more divisive seasons in 2016 and 2018. The show skyrocketed the careers of stars David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson and brewed a heady blend of alien mythology, conspiracy theories and monster-of-the-week cryptozoology and supernatural weirdness.

According to Carter, Coogler will need to switch the show's focus. "We're so steeped in conspiracies now," he said. "The X-Files dealt with a central conspiracy, but now the world is so full of conspiracies that I think that it would be a different show."

It's early days for this one, though Coogler would develop it as part of his deal with Walt Disney Television. And it'll depend on his Marvel workload and other projects as to when it might move forward.
