The phrase "the next Game Of Thrones" is bandied about often as companies – particular those with streaming services – look for the next big hit from the fantasy/historical realm. Never ones to do anything small, Amazon is betting on two: its giantLord Of The Ringsseries and this adaptation of Robert Jordan's bestselling set of fantasy tomes, The Wheel Of Time. Now we have the first trailer for the show's first season, which will be with us in a couple of months.
Set in a sprawling world where magic exists and only certain women are allowed to access it, the story follows Moiraine (Rosamund Pike), a member of the incredibly powerful all-female organization called the Aes Sedai, as she arrives in the small town of Two Rivers. There, she embarks on a dangerous, world-spanning journey with five young men and women, one of whom is prophesied to be the Dragon Reborn, who will either save or destroy humanity.
Rafe Judkins led the writing team for this adaptation, while Westworld and Stranger Things directing veteran Uta Briesewitz kicks things off overseeing the first two episodes.
The Wheel Of Time launches on Amazon on 19 November with three initial episodes, then one new episode debuts weekly on Fridays up until the season finale on 24 December.
