As a wise wizard once sort of said, "A new Lord Of The Rings: The Rings Of Power Season 2 trailer is never late, nor is it early — it arrives precisely when it means to." And our latest look at the upcoming second series of J. D. Payne and Patrick McKay's lavish Prime Video Lord Of The Rings prequel made a hell of an entrance at San Diego Comic Con's hallowed Hall H today. In an epic three-and-a-half-minute trailer boasting balrogs, Bombadils, Barrow-wights, and more epic battles than you could shake a bag of shiny accursed jewellery at, we got our best look yet at how The Rings Of Power S2 is taking "the great untold story on screen" of Sauron's rise and telling it. If sweeping, epic, properly cinematic fantasy shenanigans are your thing, then you're going to want to check out the new trailer below:
By the end of The Rings Of Power's eventful first series, the first titular rings had been forged, Charlie Vickers' Halbrand had revealed himself to in fact be the Dark Lord Sauron (much to the utter shock of Morfydd Clark's ethereal Elf Galadriel), and the devastating eruption of Mount Doom brought with it a darkness that left the fate of Middle-earth and its denizens — elves, dwarves, men, and all — looking pretty bleak. As such, Season 2 is set to up the ante for the Second Age series in a big way. Here we see a "revved up", redemption seeking Galadriel heading into battle alongside elven BFF Elrond (Robert Aramayo — seen here leading the biggest Middle-earth cavalry charge we've seen since the ride of the Rohirrim); Sauron in his Annatar form presenting himself to Celebrimbor (Charles Edwards) as "a sharer of gifts" and conjuring what looks to be a vision of a balrog to ensure his evil bidding is done: and, down in Khazad-dûm, conflict is seen brewing between Prince Durin (Owain Arthur) and his dad King Durin (Peter Mullan) as the Dwarves find themselves recipient of their own ring-shaped, Annatar-given gifts.
And honestly, that's barely even the tip of the iceberg of super-darn-cool-looking stuff teased in this new trailer. There's a suspected Shelob sighting, Entwives appearance, Rory Kinnear's music-playing mage Tom Bombadil, eagles (!), Sam Hazeldine's Adar looking very sinister, more of Daniel Weyman's definitely-not-Gandalf The Stranger, and did we mention those grand-scale battles? Suffice it to say there's a hell of a lot going on in Middle-earth as Season 2 prepares to take flight, it all looks suitably spectacular, and we are very much seated and ready to see it soar.
Lord Of The Rings: The Rings Of Power returns on Prime Video on 29 August. Our precioussss awaits!
