Disney's corporate ownership of The Muppets has been a hit or miss affair. For every movie or show that finds the right groove (The Muppets in cinemas, the more recent Muppets Haunted Mansion Halloween special on Disney+) there are several that don't make the best use of Jim Henson's creations (The Muppets TV series for one). Disney+ is trying again, this time focusing on Muppet Show house band The Electric Mayhem Band.
The new show, The Muppets Mayhem has a story that sees, quote, "The Electric Mayhem on an epic musical journey to finally record their first studio album. With the help of a driven young music executive, the old-school Muppet band comes face to face with the current day music scene as they try to finally go platinum."
Lily Singh, who sprang from the ranks of YouTube content creators to become a talk show host and actress, will play the aforementioned A&R executive, Nira, who must wrangle the chaotic musicians as they try to strike it rich.
This series comes from Adam F. Goldberg, best known for creating US sitcom The Goldbergs based on his youth, Muppet veteran performer/writer Bill Barretta and actor/writer Jeff Yorkes.
Barretta will pull double duty, also playing Dr. Teeth, who is on vocals and keyboards, alongside Animal (Eric Jacobson) on drums, Floyd Pepper (Matt Vogel) on vocals and bass, Janice (David Rudman) on vocals and lead guitar, Zoot (Dave Goelz) on saxophone and Lips (Peter Linz) on trumpet.
From the sounds of it, this one is having more luck than Muppets Live Another Day, which was in development from Josh Gad, Adam Horowitz and Eddy Kitsis, which didn't make it past pilot stage. Good luck, Mayhem!
