This is not a drill. We repeat, this is not a drill. Netflix has renewed a show, folks — not cancelled, but renewed! After pulling the plug on KAOS just yesterday, consigning the modern-day mythological drama to the same streaming scrapheap in the sky as Dead Boy Detectives, The Brothers Sun, Ratched, and That 90s Show, the streaming giant is putting its televisual eggs in a Kate Wyler shaped basket. Per Variety's reporting, Keri Russell starring political thriller The Diplomat has landed a Season 3 renewal ahead of the launch of its second series later this month.
Whilst we've still got a couple of weeks yet before we find out how Russell's U.S. Ambassador deals with the fallout of Season 1's explosive finale — and just how exactly her on-again, off-again husband Hal (Rufus Sewell) made it out the other side in one piece — the wheels on The Diplomat's third season are already turning. According to Netflix's chief content officer Bela Bajaria, production is already underway in London and New York on the show's next run of episodes, with creator Debora Cahn confirming that cameras have already been rolling in Brooklyn. "After an amazing summer shooting in the UK, we brought London home to NY," said Cahn in a statement accompanying the renewal announcement. "Best of both worlds — filming in Brooklyn. We love doing this. We’re so excited to get to keep going.”
News of The Diplomat's Season 3 renewal comes as the show's second series prepares to welcome Allison Janney's new antagonist American Vice President Grace Penn into the politicking fold, adding to the thriller's already pretty stacked ensemble. And, after the aforementioned glut of Netflix cancellations already this year, it is heartening at least to see that there is still some space left for intelligent series with oodles of promise to build an audience and be allowed to grow organically. Just be sure to watch The Diplomat Season 2 on 31 October when it drops, because else we may be revisiting this article in the months to come to confirm that third series is also its final one.
