While various Star Trek shows and movies have visited the place, a story focusing on Starfleet Academy – where humans and others go to train to join the fleet – has, outside of the video game world, been more vaporware than reality through the years. Discovery boss (and current Trek overseer) Alex Kurtzman has been talking about it for a while, and now it sounds like it'll actually, finally happen.
According to Deadline, Kurtzman and co. are actively developing the series. Currently, Absentia co-creator Gaia Violo is at work on a version of the show, which may well get the thumbs up from ViacomCBS. But that'll be likely after the company moves ahead with the Section 31 series still in the works, to star Michelle Yeoh's Philippa Georgiou.
On the heels of Discovery and Picard's success, the Trek universe is expanding at warp speed, with Lower Decks, Prodigy and the Short Treks series up and running and Strange New Worlds, featuring the adventures of Pike and Spock due in May.
"We have to think several years out," Kurtzman said. "We’re thinking about knowing we’ll want new shows on the air two or three years from now so we have to start planning those now. There’s a bunch of things in development now that are starting to take shape and we’re super excited about it."
We'll have to wait and see if the Academy show goes ahead this time, but regardless, it sounds like plenty more Trek is on the way.
